Trees and Rocks and Bears, Oh My!

Josh and I took a Jeep ride up Sheep Creek (near Gibbonsville) at the beginning of October. Neither of us had ever been up that road before, but we both liked it. There's a community of homes not too far from the highway, then the road winds through trees as it gains elevation. It was especially pretty with the fall foliage, and we were lucky enough to see a small black bear cross the road in front of us. We stopped the car and watched it meander through the trees below us. It was such a cool sight!

There was evidence of a mudslide on the road leading up the
mountainside, but thankfully the road had been cleared.

On Monday, October 10th, Josh had the day off work (since it was Columbus Day), so he went dirt-biking in the area north of Gibbonsville. He'd ridden in the same area 2 years ago with his friends Greg Young and Matt Groll, but it snowed that day, so they were only able to go about 20 miles of the 80 miles they had originally planned. This time, the weather was MUCH nicer! He started his dirt bike ride at Twin Creeks on the single track path and rode up to the Divide trail, then riding north to Lost Trail. After that, he crossed the highway and headed east to the Continental Divide trail. He followed it south to Sheep Creek, then rode down Sheep Creek and back down the highway to the starting point where he'd parked his truck. He rode for nearly 6 hours, completing a 60 mile loop. He was pretty sore when he got home that night. There had been lots of downed trees along the trail that he'd had to cut with a handsaw. And later in the day, coming down Sheep Creek, he hit some loose rocks which threw him forward over the handlebars, and his head hit a log. He was pretty tired by this point, and it knocked the wind out of him. He steadied himself, regained his footing, and then he cut up the thick log that was blocking the path (which now had a piece of his helmet embedded in it). When he got back on his motorbike, he realized the accident had also bent the handlebars. After that, he encountered a pretty steep single track trail along Sheep Creek that had a sheer drop-off, which was super sketchy riding on--especially in his tired state and the shape his motorbike was in! Thankfully, he made it back to the truck okay. He loaded his bike, came home, and shared with me all about his crazy solo adventure! I'm SO grateful he was wearing a helmet and that he was okay!
