Challis Hot Springs: The Final Camping Destination of 2018

The Challis XC meet was on September 15. We decided to go camping there on Saturday night after the XC meet. We haven't been able to do that for the past 2 years due to Salmon's homecoming and friend's wedding receptions, so we were excited to go camping there again. We just love it there! It's my favorite out-of-town XC meet! On Friday after I got home from Mud Lake, Ammon surprised me by coming home to visit for the weekend, too!

On Saturday morning, Jonah and Micah rode the team bus down. Josh had to work at the golf course for a couple of hours and Kanyon and I worked on getting the camping trailer all loaded up with food and swim gear. We made it to the campground about a half hour before the first race began. There was a junior high boys' race, a junior high girls' race, then high school boys and high school girls. Jonah and Micah ran really well during the high school race. (I'll post their times and standings in a different blog post.) The last race of the day is a coaches race--anyone is welcome to run. Because Kanyon wasn't there with his team, he ran in the last race of the day and so did Ammon. Kanyon surprised me and did the 3 mile run, too, rather than the typical 1.5 mile that other junior high runners do. Ammon hadn't run since the Beaverhead 55K in July, so he was worried about being out of shape for the race, but he did great and looked strong! The water hazard was MUCH higher this year--higher than it's ever been due to the construction of a new culvert that is higher off the ground so the water gets backed up as a result. The race is a 1.5 mile loop that the high school runs twice, and as a result, they have to go through the water crossing twice. They were all soaking wet and so muddy when their race was through!

And the high school boys are off! There were 8 teams in all.

Our cousin Randy coaches at Jerome, and he ran the coaches race, too!
I loved how his team supported him down the final stretch!

After the races and medals were done, we parked the camping trailer into the corner spot and went swimming. There was a bunch of kids at first, and then they all left, and it was pretty empty after that. We swam that night, had dinner, and Ammon left to go back to visit his friends in Salmon. On Sunday morning, we got up, ate breakfast, and went swimming again before packing everything up to head back to Salmon. It was a wonderful and relaxing last camping trip of the year!!
