Eagle, Birdie, Par, Bogey

These are all common terminologies in golf, and I didn't know what they even meant until years after Ammon was born. But he already understood them when he was young!

Ammon has been competitively playing golf since he was 8 years ago, and started playing on the golf course with his dad when he was 2. For years, he's been waiting to play on the high school golf team, and that desire finally came true this year! Last year, the team won the first state golf championship in our high school's history, and he was wishing he was a part of the team, then! Because of the state championship, it became a popular sport at our high school this year, but he was a golfer even before it became popular! For years, I've taken him alone to the golf tournaments in eastern Idaho, and all that effort and practice and work paid off this year when he joined the team! He was used to playing competitively, and golfing under pressure, and as a result, he didn't seem like he was just a Freshman when he was at tournaments, he played like an upper-classman. He was usually assigned the number 2 or number 3 position on the team, behind senior Tucker Hamilton and junior Blade Barney, and he almost always played accordingly. I got to go to 3 of his tournaments this year, and I liked watching him play (even when he wished I wasn't there!), and Josh went to almost all of them (as the bus driver for the team), and loved watching his son, too! The golf season lasted from mid-March to mid-May, and Ammon did very well throughout the season.

March 19 -  at Jefferson Hills in Rigby. Ammon scored 87, and tied for 2nd overall

April 2 - at Salmon Valley GC (our home turf). Ammon scored 88, and tied for 2nd overall. The weather was so funky--it was sunny, windy, hailed, snowed, and rained the several hours we were on the course!

April 7 - at Sage Lakes in Idaho Falls. Ammon scored 47 and placed 3rd. The low score is a result of the weather; the tournament was cut short and most players only got 9 holes done (instead of 18).
The weather started out nice enough...

...but quickly turned very nasty.

April 16 - at Teton Lakes in Rexburg. Ammon scored 89, and tied for 7th. It was a bigger tournament with 6 schools-most of the other tournaments had just 4 schools.

April 22 - at Teton Lakes in Rexburg again. Ammon scored 85, and placed 20th. This was a huge tournament with 13 schools, larger schools, and harder competition.

April 27 - at Pinecrest in Idaho Falls. Ammon scored 90, and tied for 4th.

May 1 - at Mackay Golf Course. Ammon scored 84, and placed 4th. This was the only golf tournament that Josh couldn't go to. This is a smaller golf course, and Ammon didn't like it, and a lot of his teammates struggled on this course, too. But it was a beautiful day, and I enjoyed watching the golfers from our team!

Ammon and some of his teammates

May 4 - District Tournament at Pinecrest (again) in Idaho Falls. Ammon scored 89, and tied for 4th. It was a very competitive day: our boy's team tied for first, but in a playoff against Watersprings, we lost. Our girl's team got first place, too.

Josh with the coach Charlotte.
I thought it was funny how they dressed alike!

May 11-12 - State Tournament at Lewiston Golf Course. Ammon scored 87 on the first day, and 87 on the second day. He was compositely the best scorer for our team at State, Unfortunately our team didn't become repeat state champions, but there's always ghope for next year! ;)
The team got to practice on the course on the 10th. It was a very hilly course.

Congratulations Ammon on a successful first season with the high school golf team!

Blooms

I love to see the trees blooming in the spring! It's so magical and wondrous, and it feels heavenly to see them abundant with flowers! I just love the sight of them, and admired them for as long as it lasted!
the blossoming apple trees seemed so inviting

the plum tree had beautiful pink blossoms

Even the bushes on the north side of the house bloomed
this year! I don't remember that happening before.

There's an old, large, overgrown apple tree in the field below our house that I absolutely adored this year. It caught my eye every time I drove by, so one evening I walked down and took some photos of it, too.
It kind of looks like a mis-shapen heart

These pictures don't really do justice to truly how magnificent it was!

Mother's Day felt different to me this year. Josh and Ammon were gone to state golf in Lewiston, Idaho that weekend. I stayed busy working on projects around the house in their absence, and I took the 3 younger boys to Stanley with me on Sunday for cousin Sammy's mission farewell where I did a special musical number. It was a nice church service, and a lovely family get-together afterwards, but when I drove home that evening, I missed Josh being here. I texted him this photo that evening, with the message: "Enjoying my mother's day gift to myself. Wish you were here in the hammock next to me, though."

I felt like I didn't get to relax or be treated special for Mother's Day like I wanted (I literally only got to sit and relax in my hammock chair for about 5 minutes before I had to get up and fix the sprinkler in the yard because Jonah messed with it, and then I got wet from it and decided I wasn't meant to relax on Mother's Day). I even went shopping for my own gifts the previous day, which hasn't happened before. I got the flowers that I wanted to plant around outside, and I bought my own card and had the boys sign it, too. Micah gave me a lindt chocolate ball (my favorite!), which was super thoughtful of him, and Kanyon gave me a ceramic cast of his handprint that he'd made and painted at school, which was cute (but it accidentally broke on the bus when he brought it home). My mother-in-law bought me a gorgeous bouquet of flowers that were delivered to my work at school on Thursday, and they brightened up my home and my spirits for over a week, as different lillies in the bouquet continued to bloom and the smell and sight of them was simply spellbinding.
I bought the "For you, Mommy" bouquet card for myself

The bouquet after I first got it, with just one open lillie
After a few days, the second lillie opened.
Then two more on the back bloomed vibrantly

Get your motor running, Head out on the highway

One of Josh's dreams came true: he bought a street bike at the beginning of May.

We've always talked about getting one, and riding on it to Sturgis and around the country after we retire. He's been looking at a specific one for about a year, and thinking about purchasing it, and when the lady who owned it finally dropped the sale price into a range that he could afford, he knew he didn't want to pass up the chance.

It's not a Harley, but it's close enough. He loves this bike--he loves the modified exhaust that produces a loud sound, and the higher handlebars, and that it provides an extra seat so I can ride with him too (we wear helmets, I promise). It's been rainy weather for the most part since he's gotten it, but we have taken it on a few short rides together on sunny evenings. I've loved wrapping my arms around him as he takes me for a spin! One day, he even surprised me at work and showed up in the motorbike to take me to lunch: I was seriously grinning from ear-to-ear because it felt like I was being picked up by a dark knight on shining armor! My favorite thing about this motorcycle is seeing him exude happiness after taking a ride on it! This bike makes him feel alive (after all, he WAS born to be wild), and I think he looks pretty darn good on it, too!

Honey-Do, Do-Myself Projects

There was a list of small projects to do around the house, both inside and out, that was getting longer and longer. I kept hoping that Josh would get around to helping me do them, but I knew that was near impossible since spring is his busiest time of year working 3 jobs (golf course, driving bus, and mowing lawns). The first two weekends of May, Josh was gone because he drove the bus for Ammon's high school golf District and State tournaments, and I decided to keep myself busy in his absence working on the list of projects while he was gone.

I put up the new window blinds that I'd ordered for our anniversary in the two living room windows. The previous blinds were the small cheap plastic ones, and one was completely broken. The large windows produce a lot of heat and glare when the evening sun shines through directly onto whoever sits on the couch, so new blinds were a necessity. I ordered thicker faux-wooden ones, and I can't believe the difference they've made! It's wonderful to have working blinds again, and they make the room look nicer, too!

The wall above the piano has bugged me for some time--there was a mish-mash of pictures on the wall that have been there since we moved in 5 years ago, and I'd become bored with it. I've been thinking for years about making some vinyl letters quoting my favorite scripture to place on the tall wall, but I still haven't done it yet. However, I did find some music pictures that go well with the colors in the living room, so I got them and hung them there instead. I like that it makes the wall space seem new!

The back exterior wall of the house has bugged me for years. It's so colorless and dreary, and I finally realized just this spring what to do to remedy the problem!

I got some metal stars at the new ShopKo, and screwed them in! They are perfect for the space, and I'm so happy with how it looks now!

Right underneath those stars is a flower box next to the stone path that Josh built. I created a border for that flower box using bricks last year, so I decided to use that same trim for the peonies that are next to the deck stairs. It wasn't a large area, so it only took me about an hour to create a straight edge, dig down enough to place the bricks, and level the bricks. I like the updated, cleaner look of the small flower bed now!

I hung a hammock for Josh on Father's Day last year in between the two apple trees in the back yard. It's been a great addition to the yard, but throughout the year, I've felt like the space needed another seat, too, that way we can both be lounging together in the same area. So, I purchased another hammock chair, and bought some rope at the hardware store, and hung it up myself. It's been my new favorite place to sit as of late!!

The fruit garden that's adjacent to the back yard has been in need of some TLC for a while. I trimmed all the raspberry stalks, trimmed the peach trees, trimmed the shade tree in the corner, and majorly weeded the strawberries. The deer have gotten into this garden for the past two summers, and I decided that if I was going to stay on top of the weeding of this patch, that I needed to do something about the falling temporary fence so that the deer wouldn't eat all the products of my hard work!
Notice the green posts were leaning in and the netting is all droopy as a result.
There was no gate before, so I'd have to pull back part of the net to get in.
Also, the white cement block was used to put the sprinkler on for better water coverage.
This is the project that I knew that I REALLY needed Josh's help with, because I'd never done any fencing on my own before. I went to the local ranch store and bought 7 posts, picked up an old gate from Josh's work, came home and started digging holes for the posts. I dug holes for 3 of the posts, then quit for the day. The next weekend, I bought hardware to attach the gate to the posts, and dug holes for 2 more of the posts. Thankfully, Josh had a small window of time to help me, and he used his dad's tractor with the post-pounder attachment to secure all of the posts in the ground (reinforcing the 5 I'd already set in, and putting in the last 2). I used the same mesh material that was previously there to hang around all the new posts until we can add poles to the posts in a future year. The next weekend, Josh helped me attach the metal gate to the wooden fence, and the fencing project was finally complete! It's been a huge improvement, and I'm so glad Josh could help me with this project!

On Mother's Day weekend, I purchased and planted flowers to place all around the front and back of the house. I decided to add taller, more bold colored plants in the two pots that are right by the front door, and I've been super pleased with the look! I can't believe I haven't thought to do this in previous years--I've always just put the same flowers in those pots as all the other pots.

P.S. I got that new door welcome sign from D.I. this spring.
Josh hates it because it's so large, and it bangs when the door shuts, but I really love it!

I planted white and hot pink petunias in the other pots along the front and back sides of the house.

Josh also got me some pale pink wave petunias that I planted in the corner of the back yard on the two big wooden stumps, and I like how they flow from the home-made planter pots.

There's something empowering about doing a project: from conceiving it, to working on it, and then seeing it's completion. Whenever I finish a project, and lovingly admire it afterwards, I think of the words that Elder Uchtdorf shared in his 2008 Women's LDS Conference address about the beauty of creating:  "The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before. Everyone can create. You don’t need money, position, or influence in order to create something of substance or beauty. Creation brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We develop ourselves and others when we take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty. Creation means bringing into existence something that did not exist before—colorful gardens, harmonious homes, family memories, flowing laughter."

Rings on Her Fingers

I wear four rings on my fingers, and I frequently look at them and am filled with love and thoughts for my family members, because every ring represents a generation in my family. I bend my knuckles in a certain way to make the rings become close together, and I admire them and think about what they mean to me.

I had a hard time taking a picture of my fingers without using my hands!
(hence, the weird angle of the rings)

On my left pinky is the Mother's Ring that Josh gave me for Christmas in 2013. There's a birth stone for each of my children in it: a garnet for Ammon, an amethyst for Kanyon, and two sapphires for Jonah and Micah. It's the newest of the rings, and one that I truly treasure. I'm so grateful to be a mother to my four sons, and I just love this ring that Josh gifted me as a visual reminder of my four best accomplishments in life!

On my left ring finger is my engagement ring and wedding band. I originally had a different wedding band that was shaped like a butterfly around the engagement ring's diamond, but a few years after we got married, I changed it for this simpler band with a tiny diamond on each side of the engagement ring's diamond. Last year, I finally got my engagement and wedding rings sautered together, resized, and cleaned, and it's made the ring feel like new! I love wearing this symbol of my marriage to my best friend and favorite person ever; he's a wonderful companion and I'm so blessed to experience life with him!

On my right middle finger is a silver CTR ring that my parents gave me when I graduated from Seminary and High School. I've had this ring the longest of the four, and I've rarely taken it off in the last 18 years. When I look at it, I think of my parents who raised me with righteous desires, and who were good examples of service, love, and respect. I'm so glad that I was raised by parents who cared about me and had my best interests in mind! I love them very much!

On my right ring finger is an opal ring that used to belong to my Grandma Perkins. After she passed away in October of 2009, my grandpa let the granddaughters pick what jewelry they'd like to keep that was once hers. This was the only ring that would fit my fingers, and I'm so glad because I love it immensely! There's a flaw in the opal: a crack through the gem, but the flaw brings out a variety of colors that I admire in the light. I'm very grateful for a heritage of hard-working grandparents who sacrificed both for our country and for their families, and I recognize that I'm a product of that love and sacrifice.

I'm not really a big jewelry person, but I love these four rings. They symbolize my family's past, present, and future. They represent timeless love. I know that families can be together forever!

Spring 2015 Top Ten

Spring seemed to last forever this year! It started earlier than usual, with super hot temperatures in February and March, and then the cold front finally hit in April, making it feel like the onset of winter's end was forgetfully delayed. This is a snapshot of our spring with the Top Ten list I made at the beginning of the season...

1. Ammon & Kala visit the Fisher's in Virginia
Kala, Quinn, Lisa, and Ammon in front of the DC Union Station
[completed 3/2] At the end of February, Ammon and I went out to visit my sister Lisa, her husband Mack, and son Quinn (who's a year older than Ammon) in Manassas, Virginia. We spent 4 days out there: one in Manassas, two in DC, and one in Maryland. We had a great time together!

2. Spring Break from School!
having Family Home Evening with the Williams Family
[completed 3/29] We didn't do much over spring break this year: we cleaned out and rearranged the boys' bedrooms, played with friends, and went camping at the end of the week. It was a nice break from school!

3. Go camping for the 1st time this year
Waiting for the tinfoil dinners to cook while camping
[completed 3/28] We went the last weekend of March up to Williams Lake Campground, and had an enjoyable overnight stay. We are so glad we went, because it was nice weather, we had a great time playing and relaxing, and it's still the only time that we've gone camping yet this year!

4. Celebrate Easter with the Perkins family

[completed 4/5] We had such a fun time celebrating Easter in Tremonton this year! We decorated eggs on Saturday night with Grandma, watched general conference on Sunday morning, had a nice meal Sunday afternoon, then had the annual egg hunt. All of my siblings and their families came (except Lisa), the weather was beautiful, and Josh won both the gold and the silver eggs!

5. Josh & Kala celebrate their anniversary
Josh and Kala at the Rexburg temple
[completed 4/10] I loved our anniversary! We went to dinner at Stockman's in Idaho Falls, stayed in the Congo Room at Destinations Inn, and went to cousin Mikey's wedding in the Rexburg temple.

6. Take walks & ride bikes together
Micah and Jonah on their new BMX bikes
[completed in March] In February, Jonah and Micah bought new bikes. It was really nice weather for most of March, so we went on a lot of bike rides together. We went around the 4-mile loop several times on our bikes, and Josh and I went for walks down our lane as well. And then April came along, and suddenly we stopped riding and walking together, due to the cold. Hopefully, we'll pick up the family exercise routine again this summer!

7. Watch Ammon's H.S. golf tournaments
Ammon during the home tournament at the Salmon GC
[completed 5/13] Ammon did very well playing for the high school golf team this spring. It was his first year playing on a school golf team, and he was always either the 2nd or 3rd place player (and scorer) for the team! He loved playing golf for the school, and became good friends with several of the kids on the team.

8. Go on field trips with the boys
Kanyon & his friend Hesstyn on a helicopter simulator
at the Salmon Heli-Tack.
Jonah, Linden, Carson, and Micah on the famous
staircase at the Hotel Meade in ghost town Bannack.
[completed 6/1] I was so lucky that I got to go on both Kanyon's 2nd grade BLM/Forest Service field trip and Jonah and Micah's 5th grade Bannack field trip this year!

9. Plant flowers for Mother's Day

[completed 5/9] The flower that seems to do the best in our yard is the petunia. The deer don't touch it, they're pretty hardy, and they're not too expensive. I planted 3 varieties of petunias on Mother's Day weekend, putting them in the front and back of the house and along the fence, too.

10. Kala & Ammon go to Lagoon for band comp.
Ammon, Kala, and Darcy on the Rocket Re-Entry ride
[completed 5/31] I had so much fun on the high school band/choir trip to Utah this year! There will be lots more about it later!
