Spring Vacation Part 2: {sort of} lost & {goblins} found!

This is the 2nd post in a series about our Spring Break Vacation this year.

After leaving Grandma Rose's house in Pleasant Grove, we headed south towards Moab. I let Ammon look at the map for a while, so I relied on my memory to tell Josh directions on how to get to Moab. I told him to take the Nephi exit, and we'd head south on that highway. When we were driving past the Spanish Fork exit on the freeway, the sign also said it was for Moab. "Is this our exit?" asked Josh. I answered: "I don't think so. This must be another way to get to Moab, but it's not the way we're going". So when we stopped for gas at Nephi, I got the map back from Ammon to double check, and sure enough, the exit that we'd passed 25 miles ago WAS indeed the exit we were supposed to take. This of course really angered Josh, but it didn't really bother me...mostly, because it helped me follow through with a plan I'd had to go visit the Goblin Valley Utah State Park.

Weeks prior to going on vacation, I decided that I wanted to squeeze in a visit to Goblin Valley. I'd never been there before, but I knew of some friends that had gone there with their families and really enjoyed it, so I wanted to include it in our vacation plans. I looked on the map, and realized that it wouldn't actually be on the way to Moab. At that time, I was trying to decide the best way to get there, either down the Ephraim highway from the Nephi exit to Interstate 70, then head east towards Moab and hit Goblin Valley along the way OR head down the Price highway from the Spanish Fork Exit until I-70, then go west for 10 miles to the Goblin Valley exit, then backtrack to Moab.

Josh was never sure if he wanted to go there or not, so we hadn't solidified our plans regarding the visit to the State Park. But once we got to Nephi, we had to make a decision: either backtrack the 25 miles to Spanish Fork, then on to Moab, OR continue on the same path we were on (which was originally the longer way) and go to Goblin Valley on the way to Moab. I got my original wish: we decided to go to Goblin Valley. So, wrongfully going the longer way ended up not being a complete loss; I felt happy to know that we were going to the place I wanted to! Josh, however,  felt the opposite about taking the wrong exit, and from Nephi to I-70, he was irritated with me! ;)

Once we got on I-70, and started heading east, it looked like the shortest way to get to Goblin Valley (which is on a loop road with both ends of the loop being a freeway exit) was the west exit (the exits are 20 miles apart). As we were heading east, I kept referring to the map so I could keep track of how close we were getting (in case the kids asked "are we almost there?"). This was a very boring stretch of the trip: there is nothing on I-70 of any interest to the kids, so I kept trying to entertain them with several games. This being one of them:

When we got to mile post 132, I realized that we missed the exit that would've led us to the Park. So, we turned around on the freeway, and backtracked a few miles (and Josh was doubly irritated at me by now for being a terrible navigator, so I chose to ignore him and occupied myself by taking photos, including the one pictured above). As we approached the exit that we were SUPPOSED to take 3 miles earlier, I realized why I'd originally missed it: there was NO markings or signage whatsoever saying that it was the exit for Goblin Valley. We took the exit, and shortly after beginning the drive down the road, we realized WHY there was no signage for Goblin Valley at that freeway exit: it was an AWFUL road. It was a single-lane, very bumpy, dirt road that led to a single-lane, very bumpy, rocky road on rocky cliffs. The twenty miles we drove on that road leading to Goblin Valley was the LONGEST and WORST part of our entire trip. The boys were tired of being in the car and were whining, Josh was mad that he'd followed so many wrong directions that day and was impatient, and I started resenting everyone for being mad that I'd planned a fun trip and I yelled at them all. Josh was SOOO afraid that we'd get a flat tire on that terrible road and would be stranded in the heat with a cranky family on a rocky ledge. Thankfully, though, THAT didn't happen. About two miles before the park, the road became a two-lane paved road. If you ever want to go to Goblin Valley, don't make the same mistake we did: make sure you take the eastern exit from the freeway (even if you're driving from west to east, you will still save so much time and drama by taking the 2nd exit!)!! We FINALLY made it to our destination:

And after just a few moments of being at Goblin Valley, all the anger and frustration and impatience dissipated. We all LOVED this beautiful place! This is the view from where we began our trek around it on foot:

The kids were happy to be free from the car prison, and able to explore the park without following any kind of trail whatsoever! There wasn't a lot of people there, and the weather was simply gorgeous, both of which also helped improve our moods rather quickly!

For two hours, we walked and explored and hiked all around the amazing Goblin formations and took lots and LOTS of pictures!!!

I love that picture of all my boys!!! As I was taking the photo, I saw something small scurrying by out of the corner of my eye. We spent the next several minutes trying to catch it!

We got close to capturing it, but never could. Can you see it in the photo below?
It's a lizard in the center of the photo, with the tip of its tail in the shade and its body in the sunshine on the rock.

After over an hour, we finally made it to the end of the Goblin Valley to the rock cliffs!

This is the view looking back on where we'd just come from. We parked our car at the top of that center low hill:

Can you spot my own little guy down in the valley of Goblins?!

And can you spot my oldest boy trying to climb the cliff wall?!

Ammon was determined to scale the ridge!

And once he made it there, he couldn't seem to get down. He thought he could jump. And he kept telling himself that he could. Josh tried convincing him of that possibility as well.

But no matter how many times he told himself he could jump, his feet wouldn't follow. He was in this position for over 15 minutes.

We got impatient for him to jump, so we started to head back to the car. Finally, he just decided to come back down the same way he went up! By the time we made it back to the car, we were all tired and happy. After exploring so long in the heat, everybody was glad to sit in an air-conditioned car for the final stretch of the drive to Moab (which we made it to without getting lost or traveling on bad roads again! Yay!).

It was worth the extra drive and madness to go to Goblin Valley, and I'm so glad that we did. I loved all the different formations we saw there, some of which were in the above photos. Here's some more that I really liked:
This one reminded me of E.T.

Spring Vacation Part 1: Grandma's House

We took our family vacation over spring break at the end of March this year. We usually go during the summer, but this upcoming summer two of my sisters are getting married; and since Josh is taking time off for both of those, we probably wouldn't be able to squeeze in a family vacation then, too.

Every year, we go and visit one of mine or Josh's living grandparents and we add a family trip somewhere else then, too. This year we visited my Grandma Rose in Pleasant Grove, and we made a plan to go to Arches National Park afterwards. We left Salmon on Saturday, March 22nd and drove as far as my parents' house in Tremonton. We ate dinner, played games, relaxed and spent the 1st night of our vacation there.
Playing Clue with Grandma and Grandpa. Ammon won!
On Sunday morning, we left Tremonton and drove to Pleasant Grove. My grandma hasn't been doing very well lately. She spent some time in the hospital last fall, and now my mom and her siblings and my grandma's sister Linda all take turns taking care of her at her home. She is very weak, so she lays on her couch all day and night. She has lost some of her vision, so she is unable to do the handy things that she used to love to do: word searches and card games and crocheting and making dolls.

A large screen TV was purchased and put on the wall adjacent to the couch, and the power is on a lot to make the space not feel so quiet. Also, Aunt Janet bought some birds that live in a cage in the living room. They make noise and bring life to the room.

Uncle David made a larger version of her marbles game to help her be able to see and play, and she does with Aunt Linda every week.

We stayed at my grandma's house for about two hours. It was a nice day, so the boys played outside for a while. My aunt Connie was staying with Grandma that day, so Josh and I talked to her for a while--I haven't talked to her in years! I like that parts of my Grandma's house have remained unchanged over the years. I get a feeling of constancy and comfort when I visit, and I really like that. For as much as I love rearranging my own home, I like that the homes of my Grandparents rarely change!

This is the only bathroom in the house. I know the wallpaper
is ugly,  but when I see it, it reminds me of all my childhood visits
to Grandma's house, so for that reason, I love this wallpaper.

The floral wallpaper in my Grandma's bedroom has also
remained unchanged since my childhood!

This is Grandma's utility room. This room used to be the
kitchen when my mom was younger, so this wall has
always had a kitchen-y feel. I've always liked how it
resembles its original purpose.
My grandpa died 12 years ago, and ever since I was a little kid, his hats have been hanging on hooks lining the wall next to the back screen door. Although lots of his things have been cleared out of the house since his passing, the rows of his hats have not. Grandma's house just wouldn't be the same without Grandpa's hats.

April 2014 on FB

April 6: Today's good news: I got to sleep in with my hubby, I stayed in my PJ's all day, I heard some wonderful talks at General Conference, I passed off a college math lesson, and I went for a bike ride with Josh. It's been an awesome Sunday!!

April 9: I took my first WGU college class final over the weekend, and my mentor told me last night that I passed with an 80%! I'm SUPER thrilled!!! What a good feeling to have the first class over and done, and being one step closer to having my teaching degree!

April 11: Okay, so...how did everyone get the memo about National Siblings Day? I've never heard about it before! Now I'm wondering...Is it a facebook phenom or a real holiday?

April 16: [in response to a quiz called "What Color Matches Your Personality?", I got: You are pink! You're full of love and affection, and family is everything to you. Sometimes you need protection, special treatment and desire to live a more sheltered life.]  Apparently I am pink. Although I HATED this color growing up, I've become quite fond of it this year (as evident in the pink streak in my hair!)

April 19: What a fabulous egg hunt this morning in Salmon! Thank you Rotary!!! My kids were so happy! Now we are heading to Utah for an Easter weekend with my family and I'm SOOO looking forward to it! I just LOVE Easter!

April 22: Soooo proud of my 4th grade students for their awesome play performances this week! It does my heart good to see them excel after 4 months of hard work and practice!

April 24: What. a. WEEK!!!! I directed two 4th grade class plays equaling 4 performances. And the students were phenomenal and made me cry! I took a final exam for my college math class. AND PASSED!!!! And I just rode 14 hours on a bus with 44 kids from Salmon to Seattle for high school choir/band tour!!! SO glad to be off of moving wheels and on solid ground again!

April 25: Had an uplifting experience, 520’ above Seattle at the Space Needle! The SHS Show Choir sang a song for all who were on the Space Needle to hear: "525,600 Minutes".

April 25: I'm at Chihuly Garden & Glass in Seattle
April 25: SHS Choir & Band students had dinner at the Hard Rock Café on Day 2, along with 2 other high schools. The whole restaurant was rockin' and all the kids were moving and singing along to music videos while we ate. It was completely awesome and I absolutely loved it!

April 26: All 44 of our awesome performing students! I love traveling with this group!

April 27: While waiting for the bus to get us after dinner on Day 2 at the Hard Rock Café, the choir broke out in song in downtown Seattle. It was beautiful! We were at a regular bus stop and a sweet old lady, who was waiting for her bus, couldn't stop crying as they sang!

April 27: While we were at the Mariners game, every time there was a break and music played and the large screen showed people dancing, our huge group got up and danced and made noise. We wanted so bad to make it onto the screen. We never gave up hope, but alas it never happened. Sad face  I'm gonna say it again: I just LOVED our group!! It was so much fun to be with these outgoing kids who know how to have a good time!

April 28: Oh my gosh! My new favorite flavor of chocolate: Robinson Cano is on Jimmy Fallon right now! I just saw him for the first time at the Mariners game yesterday and fell in love!

Soul Sisters & Twisted Scissors

I started working for my friend Amanda at her new hair salon "Twisted Scissors" in March. I work a few hours each Friday for her (it's my day off of school). I answer phones and make appointments. I run her errands and make deposits for her. I do some sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, washing, and cleaning. And I love every minute of it! It's a nice break from what I do the rest of the week! Not only do I get to hang out with my awesome friend Amanda (who has an excellent sense of humor, who knows me well, and who I have the bestest times with), but I also have a few perks for working for her like trading my work hours for product...

I've always been the kind of girl who doesn't dye her hair, who waits as long as possible to get a hair trim, to buy the cheap kind of hair shampoo and hairspray. And now, I'm actually pampering myself. I get my hair trimmed every few weeks, I get my hair colored every few weeks, and I've gotten a few hair products on the days I haven't had my hair cut or dyed. I love it!!!

Here's one day that I got my bangs re-colored pink in between appointments with her clients (my hair wasn't styled yet because I was waiting until her next client was finished).

I'm so grateful for the extra time I have to spend with Amanda on Fridays! And I'm so thankful for a small part-time, non-stressful job!!
