2019 Goals Report

The LDS church came out with a new program to replace the Young Women in Excellence and Scouting programs that were previously in place; the new program would be effective January 1, 2020. We were introduced to the new program at a ward training meeting in church last October, in the form of a video by the Church leaders, which ended up being shown to us a week later than other wards and stakes due to our Stake Conference. I was hesitant when I first heard about it, because it seemed like it was too broad, wouldn't give the youth enough direction, and wasn't anything "new" (similar guidelines from the church in goal-setting have already been in place for over 40 years). However, after the training, I felt much better about it. The new activities program is simply called "Children and Youth". The purpose behind it is for youth to strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ, and to help them progress in different areas of their life in order to meet today's challenges. It is based upon individual goals set in four areas, the guideline taken from a scripture verse that provides an example from the Savior's life: "Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man" (Luke 2:52). In His youth, Jesus learned his divine identity and grew in different ways, just as today's youth can. The four areas are: Intellectual, Physical, Spiritual, and Social. Each youth will make at least one goal in each of the areas, and will constantly be striving to attain their goals. When one is accomplished, a new one can be set. Youth groups and families were instructed to help each youth by supporting them in various ways to aid in accomplishing their goals.

I'm a very goal-oriented person. Ever since I was a child, I've been making annual goals for myself in multiple categories, as directed by my dad (who'd heard it from a general authority in the 70's). I've carried on this same annual tradition with my own family as they've started growing older; we've each made annual goals in different categories, and at the end of the year, we review how well we've done. I like that the new program is just a more focused continuation of what we've already implemented in our home!

At the first FHE of the new year, we all made our own new goals for the year in each of the 4 categories, as well as family goals, then we reviewed how well we'd done on accomplishing our goals from last year--which you'll notice was not so well! We sadly only averaged about 50% completion! Hopefully we'll do better this year, especially with the new program in place to assist in motivating us!
