Summer Camps/Lessons

In June, Ammon attended a basketball day camp for 3 days in Salmon at the high school. I think this is the 3rd time he's done the camp, which he really likes, but he said this time he was one of the oldest at the camp, so it felt different for him this time around!

In July, Jonah and Micah went to a CrossFit Day Camp for 4 days at the Crossfit Studio in Salmon. They both LOVED it! It was both challenging and fun for them, and they liked the intense work-outs and core strengthening activities.

Every Wednesday in July, Kanyon and I went to the Library for its Summer Reading Program Activities. The theme this year was about heroes: "Every Hero has a Story". I was the guest reader each week, which I LOVE doing, and read books to the kids about different heroes that pertained to the specific theme that week. The first week was about Army Heroes, and Kanyon loved how a local veteran ("Sam") brought his army jeep for the kids to see and sit in, and he told them war stories, too. That was his favorite activity day of the Reading Program! The other weeks we learned about firefighters and toured the fire station, historical heroes and the kids toured the local museum, superheroes and ways to be a hero in their own lives and the 4-H ladies came and did an activity with them.
You can barely see Kanyon in this photo; he's standing so close to the jeep.
The kids did art projects every week, and one week they
painted a banner all about their heroes. This was Kanyon's:
"Army Hero is Sam", with a picture of him in his Jeeep!

Kanyon had swim lessons the first two weeks of July. He was in Level 3 for the second time this year. After last year, he was able to pass off all the requirements except for treading water. His teachers were Tim and Madison. He liked his instructors, he had a good class, he was doing so well, and really enjoyed swimming every day. I didn't get a chance to watch him the first week of lessons because I was doing errands every day during that time, trying to get ready for the family reunion I was hosting the coming weekend. I promised him that I would watch him every day the next week, and take pictures of him then. Well, that very weekend, the pump broke at the pool, and they had to cancel that second week of swim lessons because it took a few days to fix it. They rescheduled him to finish the lessons during the second week of August instead: a month after his first week, because all the other lesson sessions were booked up until then. We were both really bummed, but we patiently waited until we could finish his lessons. By the time his second week of lessons came in August, his instructor Tim had moved, so Kenadee helped Madison teach this time around. It was hard to miss a month in between the first and second weeks of lessons! But Kanyon loves swimming, and he did great!  He was able to dive off the side and the diving board, he tread water for a full minutes (he did it the longest in his class, and won the contest his instructors did; the requirement is to do it at least 30 seconds), and he swam forwards and backwards the recommended distance. I was so proud of him. The only thing he couldn't master was the rotary breathing, because he lifts his head up instead of to the side, so they recommended he take Level 3 again, but I think I will still place him in Level 4 next year.
