Our home is just one mile away from the Salmon River. During the first week of July, it was super hot, and I was dying to go for a float in it! We went to a family BBQ at Janoa's house on the evening of July 3rd, and cousin Brenda and her family came to it since they were visiting from Jerome. I asked her daughter Tanisha if she wanted to float the river with us when we went the next day, and she happily agreed. We invited her younger brother Brendan to come over to the house and play with the twins during that time, too.
We looked forward to spending time with our cousins, and when they arrived the next day, we played some fun games with them inside and out. That afternoon, we gathered up tubes from around the ditch in our backyard to take floating in the river. Josh helped me patch some up, and we thought we had 4 good tubes so that Josh & I, and Tanisha & Ammon could all ride in one. As we were driving down to the river, though, one of the tubes popped in the car and we were down to 3. We came back home, and tried to blow up our inflatable raft, but apparently Shorty had chewed part of it up. We knew we had more tubes somewhere, but we couldn't find them, so ultimately Josh decided to stay home and the 3 of us went back to the river.
We got in at the river access at the 12-mile mark and floated about 7 miles to the Shoup Bridge (which is just 1 mile from our home). It was the highest water I'd ever ridden on in the river, and it was so much fun! The waves were so much bigger and I enjoyed all the white water! This was Tanisha's first time floating the Salmon River, and she liked it too!
The water was cool and felt so good--except for the fact that it was super muddy. There had been a mudslide in Challis the previous day, and the water had turned murky the day we went floating. It felt like we were in Willy Wonka's river of chocolate, except it was not edible and it was very grimy. Once you put your hand under water, it wasn't visible at all because the mud had turned the water such a dark brown.
Me & Tanisha stayed close together in the fast water during our 2-hour float, and Ammon ended up getting further and further behind. By the time we were done and got out, we had to wait almost 10 minutes for him! Towards the end of our float, we couldn't even see him behind us anymore, which really scared me.
Even though the float began a little stressful, trying to find and fix enough tubes, it ended very relaxing and fun. It was the perfect summer activity to do on the 4th of July! We all had a great time and I've been dying to go again ever since!
