In the sun it melted, melted. Then the town it flooded, flooded.

We had such weird weather the first week of February. On Thursday afternoon (the 6th), it snowed big, beautiful flakes. When the boys got home from school, Micah and Kanyon went down by the road to build a snowman (they said if they built one at the end of our driveway by the road, instead of up by our house, that more people would see it). On Friday morning, Micah added a face, arms, and accessories. It was an awesome snowman!!

Unfortunately, not many people ended up seeing it because it didn't last very long. On Friday afternoon (the 6th), it was super windy, and all the fresh snow began to melt rather quickly. On Friday night and Saturday morning, it rained, and the snowman lost its head and half its torso.

By Saturday late afternoon/evening (the 7th), the sun was out, melting the entire remainder of the snowman, as well as the crusty, yucky snow that had covered the ground since Christmas.

It had all happened so suddenly, and since the ground was still frozen, there was a lot of water that had nowhere to go once the snow melted. There were flash floods all over Salmon on Saturday. We noticed as we drove through town on Saturday morning that Kid's Creek was overflowing into the Ack's Auction parking lot, and the parking lots of the Forest Service Building, the High School soccer field, Lemhi Lumber, and Wild Side Sports were also flooded.
The tractor is on the north side of Kid's Creek, right by the highway. It pulled out
the culvert, and took away the bridge across the creek that leads to the store in
order to let more water flow down the Creek so it wouldn't be so flooded. Ack's
parking lot completely disappeared under all that water from the creek's overflow.

That afternoon, Ammon went in to help fill sand bags at Dahle's Red-E-Mex plant. Over 10,000 sand bags were filled and distributed to divert water away from streets and people's homes in town, especially around South St. Charles St., River Street, and Water Street. When the boys and I went into town that night to go to someone's house that lived along one of those streets, we couldn't even drive through a couple intersections because the water had risen so high
One of the intersections on the east side of town that was flooded due to the
overflow of Kid's Creek. You can see the sand bags all around the perimeter
to help divert the water away from the nearby house.

Nobody had ever seen a flash flood in Salmon SOOO early in the year before. It came as a shock to everyone. A lot of people came together to help out the affected areas and helped prevent damage to the threatened homes and businesses. Ammon was particularly glad that he was able to help with the group of people that gathered to fill sandbags. I was gone for the majority of the day with Kanyon and the twins to Idaho Falls for Kanyon's birthday party, so I couldn't help. And unfortunately Josh couldn't join the effort in town either because he was busy making a diversion to rid the excess water from flooding his shop at the golf course! There was a LOT of flooding at the golf course that day...

Thankfully, the water began receding that night at the golf course and in town. It was freakishly crazy how the wintry snow disappeared and spring appeared so suddenly in one night at the beginning of February.
